have considered the US first?

BP group wins Iraq oil contract

June 30, 2009

Iraq is hoping foreign firms will raise production levels in an industry that has suffered from neglect [EPA]

An oil consortium led by British Petroleum has won a contract to develop a large oil field in Iraq, as dozens of international firms compete for the rights to the nation's oil and gas reserves.

BP, along with China's CNPC, secured the contract for the Rumaila oil field on Tuesday, the largest of Iraq's six oil fields on offer to foreign and state-owned companies.

The contract race is the first opportunity for global energy giants to gain a hold in the country since the Baath party nationalised the Iraq Petroleum Company in 1972, seven years before former president Saddam Hussein took power.

how many troops did China contribute to the 'war';?

or perhaps it is because the US barreled into Iraq assuming that they would take over the Iraqi oil ~~ and now see that they will not.

We shal see, but surely the Iraqi government has considered that the US led the war for 6 years, but in the process, destroyed much of their infrastructure, as well as causing the taking of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi innocents.

Actually it looks as if China will be the overall winner concerning further contracts.Dateline Iraq. So BP and China CNPC receive lucrative oil contracts. Do you think Iraqi oil Minstry should ?
Would look a bit suspicious if the US was the only ones to be offered the pick of the crop wouldn't it?

I think it is more of a need to look balanced and impartial.

I always thought the invasion of Iraq was just for the oil - and to secure reserves for the US - now I see their true colours.

What sweetner did the minister who decided this get ?

What is wrong with the Iraqis charging a decent rate for their resources? If they did, then the balance of power would eventually move to those with most reserves - namely the Arab states.

At least they should have set a time limit on the deal - The US will rob them blind.

As for China - maybe they offered the biggest carrot regarding investment in manufacturing. I expect to see cheap imports from Iraq in the future - ';made in iraq'; - China is running out of plastic - so it makes sense to produce plastic next to the refineries - and ship it to china - or just manufacture in Iraq. As China develops - wages rise, and cheap labour has to be found elsewhere. I wonder if they are actually planning to cash in on the post-war baby boom in 16 years time? - Lots of workers - wages drop = cheap labour. Just slavery by another name.
